Group work can provide students with a rich cooperative learning experience. They may be small, temporary ad-hoc groups arranged for informal in-class activities, or larger formal groups in which students work together to complete extensive projects.

INSTRUCTOR MISTAKE

Present the class with a statement or diagram and ask students what is wrong with it. Divide students into groups of three or four to discuss and decide what is wrong with the statement or diagram presented. Each group must agree on a solution and be prepared to present it to the rest of the class. Groups must try to convince their peers that their solutions are correct. Use this as a review or a lead-in to new topics.

VISIONING AND FUTURING

Divide students into groups of four. Provide 5 to 10 minutes for groups to imagine how the course material/topic/concept may change or be effected 10-20 years from now. Students may focus on analyzing and evaluating patterns or visualizing the future. Have groups share and discuss their insights with the rest of class.

PRO & CON GRID

Divide students into groups and have them evaluate the pros and cons of a procedure, technique, conclusion, action of a fictional character, political decision, etc. After 5 to 10 minutes, have groups write the pros on one side of the board and cons on the other side. Use the pro and con grid to inspire discussions or debates.

JIGSAW

Jigsaw is one of many group work activities and can take various forms. One way involves students being divided into groups and assigning individuals to a specific task. After completing the tasks, they join the pieces together to form a larger project.

ASSESSMENT IDEAS

Check-in Groups: Formative
Assign students to "check-in groups". Use regular scheduled times in class to have students "check-in" with their groups and discuss or review concepts that they still struggle with. At the end of the "check-in", groups present a topic or concept that they feel needs more review or explaining.

Class Discussion: Reflection
Once students have reflected on their group's performance of a task or project, have them share their experience with the rest of class. This can help prepare students for future group work and give instructors some feedback about the assignment/project.
